The Maldives

What a wildly beautiful, exotic yet strange part of the world.

Back in Nov myself and my finance took a trip of a lifetime to the northern atolls in the Maldives for a 2 week all inclusive surf trip.

Myself being a beginner/intermediate surfer and my partner being a lot better – we needed somewhere that would cater for us both – at the time of us booking I was relatively new to surfing, and we were recommended by the surf guide to book in November as it’s the off season, so surf was a lot smaller and not busy.

Well did November deliver – we were a little sceptical as the date got closer that we thought the waves would be too small (as I had made a fair bit of progress since originally booking). But the size was perfect. We had a lovely mellow first week to get to grips with lohis, and the second week really made improvements – with chest to overhead perfectly clean peelers – that were so long.

We chose Lohifushi, Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort as it is home to a world class left right on the island. A limited amount of surfers are allowed to surf which means no crowds ( Im pretty sure the max amount of people we surfed with on that wave was 6 ).

Included in the package was 2 daily boat trips over to other spots – ninjas, cokes, sultans were the main ones we went to based on currents, swell and wind direction at that time of the year.

It was the first time I’d surfed in just a bikini and it felt so odd to start with – no buoyancy from the wetsuit but no mobility restrictions and I felt I could have paddled around for hours without getting tired, compared to being at home in a 6mm.

The sealife was so amazing, surfing with dolphins, turtles and black top reef sharks was just breath taking – the urchins that still managed to get me through reef boots – not so enjoyable.

My surfing progressed so much over those two weeks – there was only 3 days out of the 14 that I wasn’t in the water ( 1 due to heat stroke 🤦🏻‍♀️).

We made the best friends with the other surfing guests staying there and the surf guides were just great guys and girls too – I hope we get to surf together again soon someday!

If you ever get the chance to surf in the Maldives – don’t even hesitate.
